May 31, 2016 · Without a wastegate a turbo can easily end up in a runaway boost situation at higher loads and over spin the turbine wheel, destroying the turbo and possibly your engine. - The turbocharger wastegate solenoid is pulse width modulated by the PCM to allow fine-tuning of the turbo boost to more exactly meet engine operating conditions. The solenoid is a common failure point - symptoms of failure will include incorrect boost level and frequently code P0243 (WASTEGATE PRESSURE CONTROL PWM) .
You don't have to run a wastegate. It all depends on what you plan to do with your truck and sizing everything (fuel, turbine wheel & housing) to your intended use. It's becoming very common to run a single S300 charger with the .91 non-wastegated turbine housing. There are advantages and disadvantages to both setups.

It is no secret that the factory boost control system on the 12V is a poor design. The factory control is a spring-loaded canister. The PCM sends a small amount of boost to the canister to overide spring pressure and allow the wastegate to open. The downside is the wastegate opens and closes often prior to "set point" simply because of it's design.
